Christian metal duo Altarheart has unveiled their latest 6-song EP, “Creatures Here Below,” a project fueled by the turbulence of current world events. Frontman Anthony Thomas shares that the EP encapsulates his struggles as a Christian amidst today’s modern tensions.
“I wrote the songs of Creatures Here Below in a spirit of lamentation, frustrated with the world around us, the church, myself and people I hold dear. What started as a one-off song (the title track) extended to 3, then to 6, as I decided to flesh out a story. It takes you from good intentions to bad practice to resolution and ultimately to Jesus,” Thomas explained.
To build anticipation, the band released two singles, “Malice” and “Save Our Souls,” which delve into themes of conflict. The remaining tracks guide listeners on a spiritual journey back to God.
“My goal when writing lyrics is to have resolution. It may not happen at the end of every song, but I order tracks in albums in a way that ends in a more peaceful place than where they began,” Thomas said.
The EP's title is inspired by the Doxology, a hymn regularly sung at Thomas's church. This influence is particularly evident in the track “Scattered Sheep.”
“I love the harmony of believers singing as one voice to our Father. This EP’s songs long for that, while confronting what often separates us from each other. This polarizing political year has been heartbreaking to say the least. It was therapeutic to use this music as a plea to God,” Thomas shared.
“Creatures Here Below” is now available on all major music streaming platforms.
